A Confluence of Disciplines and Ideas
The KITD International Symposium on Tornado Dynamics and Severe Storms is the flagship event of the severe weather research calendar. Held each spring, it attracts over 500 participants from academia, government agencies, private industry, and international organizations. The symposium is deliberately interdisciplinary. A single session might include a presentation on novel radar algorithms, followed by a talk on the social vulnerability of coastal communities to landfalling tornadoes, and then a demonstration of a new building material tested in our wind tunnel. This cross-pollination is where innovation thrives; an engineer might hear a talk from a climatologist that sparks an idea for a new sensor, or a forecaster might gain a deeper understanding of model limitations from a direct conversation with the model developer.
Formats for Deep Engagement and Collaboration
The week-long event features a variety of formats beyond traditional lecture-style presentations. "Poster Palooza" sessions, where early-career researchers present their work, are vibrant hubs of discussion. Invited keynote addresses set the thematic direction, often focusing on grand challenges like climate change or the future of warnings. Panel debates on contentious topics—such as the ethics of drone chasing or the balance between false alarms and missed events—are audience favorites. We also host hands-on workshops where participants can train on our data visualization software, learn forensic damage survey techniques, or get a tutorial on using our public model output datasets. The symposium is also where many of our international collaborative projects are born, with formal and informal meetings in the hallways and over coffee leading to new joint proposals.
The impact of the symposium extends far beyond the conference center. Proceedings and presentation videos are made freely available online, reaching a global audience of students and professionals who could not attend in person. The networking fostered at the event strengthens the entire field, creating a sense of shared purpose and community. For our own staff and students, it is an unparalleled professional development opportunity, a chance to present their work to the world's experts, receive feedback, and build their reputations. The event also includes a public evening, where leading scientists give engaging talks for the local community, demystifying their work and highlighting its local relevance. This reinforces the institute's bond with its home region.

The annual symposium is more than just a meeting; it is the heartbeat of the global severe storms research community. It is where the state of the science is assessed, where new directions are charted, and where the collective resolve to understand and mitigate the tornado threat is renewed. In bringing together the brightest minds from so many fields, the event embodies the institute's core belief that solving a problem of this complexity requires not just individual genius, but the synergistic power of a connected, collaborative, and passionate scientific community.
